Traffic police upgrades variable message sign boards for real-time traffic alerts

New Delhi: Nearly a month after TOI last reported on the Delhi Traffic Police’s plans to modernise its traffic information systems, the department has integrated 42 out of 92 variable message sign boards (VMS) across key intersections and major road corridors in the capital, marking a significant push towards smarter and more responsive traffic management.

The upgraded VMS network is being linked with advanced traffic monitoring and control systems to provide commuters with real-time traffic updates and dynamic travel advisories. Officials said the digital boards will display real-time information on congestion, diversions, accident alerts, weather advisories, road closures, special traffic arrangements, and estimated travel times based on live conditions.

The initiative aims to help commuters make informed travel decisions by choosing alternative routes and planning journeys more efficiently, thereby reducing delays and easing congestion on busy corridors.

According to Delhi Traffic Police, the upgraded infrastructure will reduce idling time, and smoother traffic flow could also help lower fuel consumption and vehicular emissions, contributing to a cleaner urban environment.
