Panaji: A Merces court sentenced Gajanand Salgaonkar and Keval Fernandes to pay fines of Rs 200 each for organising a bullfight in Pilar in 2025.
According to the prosecution, they organised a bullfight in an open place in public view on Jan 24, 2025, at 10.30am near Talyakade, Zaribhat, Pilar, and incited their bulls to fight, subjecting them to cruelty. They were booked under the BNS and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Both voluntarily pleaded guilty to the offences alleged against them. They were fined Rs 100 each under Section 325 of the BNS Act, which deals with committing mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless any animal.
JMFC (F court), Merces, Ankita Navgenkar also fined them Rs 50 each under Section 11(m) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act for treating an animal with cruelty solely to provide entertainment, and another Rs 50 each under Section 11(n) of the same act for organising animal fights.
