Vasco: Sharan Metti was elected sarpanch of Sancoale village panchayat on Thursday morning. Metti had the support of former sarpanch Ramakant Borkar.
Borkar, who was recently dislodged from the post after being arrested by the anti-corruption branch of Goa police for a bribery charge, proved that he still controls the panchayat.
Marian Victor, Metti’s opponent, lost by one vote.
Earlier, Victor and Metti filed their nominations before the presiding officer Mahesh Nadkarni.
Eight panchas had signed the no-confidence motion against Borkar, but he managed to turn the table. Delivering a vicory speech, Metti said, “We are here for the development and we will see that the panchayat develops and works in peace.”
Shilpa Naik, the deputy sarpanch, who had also gone against Borkar said, “We were given wrong information about Borkar. But, now that he has explained to us the truth, we know that he is the best man for the job if we want development.” tnn
