Ambala woman dies after consuming poison, five of in-laws booked for abetment of suicide

AMBALA: A woman named Pooja of Durga Nagar, Ambala City, who had consumed poison along with one Yogesh of the same area on Monday evening, succumbed at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, Chandigarh on Tuesday.
On the complaint of Pooja’s brother Yashpal alias Rajan of Durga Nagar, the Haryana police in Ambala registered a case of abetment of suicide against five members of Pooja’s in-laws including her husband at Baldev Nagar police station (PS) on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, after post-mortem, her body was handed over to family members for last rites, said inspector Sunil Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Baldev Nagar PS.
Yashpal stated to the police, “In December 2002, my elder sister Pooja had got married to Dinesh Khurana of Panipat and they have a 14-year-old son Karan. Nearly 7 years ago, after being harassed by her in-laws, Pooja had started living in a rented accommodation at Durga Nagar, Ambala City. My sister was often harassed by her in-laws. On Saturday, my sister Kusum told me that Pooja had consumed poison at Herbal Park in Ambala City and she could not survive. My sister has committed suicide after being harassed by her in-laws.”
A case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against five accused, Dinesh, his father Lajpat Rai, his mother, his brother, and his uncle Raju Chugh has been registered at Baldev Nagar PS.
When asked why Yogesh consumed poison along with Pooja, inspector Sunil said, “So far, we have not been able to record his statement and he is still undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is stable. The doctors at GMCH have declared Yogesh fit for giving his statement but he has not given the same yet”, added SHO Sunil.
“The role of Yogesh is a matter of investigation and DSP Munish Sehgal will further investigate this case”, said Ambala superintendent of police, Abhishek Jorwal.
