Dibrugarh: At least 17 migratory grey-legged geese (Raj Deo Hah in Assamese) died of poisoning in Dikhoumukh, 22 km from Sivasagar town, in the past 24 hours. Members of NGOs Dolphin and Nature's Beckon found the carcasses in Krishna Sagar Pathar, a large field-cum-wetland in the area.
The NGOs also found 28 birds in a semi-conscious state. The Kaziranga-based Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation was contacted and a medical team took charge of the sick birds.

The carcasses were taken for postmortem.
Activist Hiren Dutta said a large number of these birds arrive in Doimukh from Siberia and Ladakh in November, breed during winter and fly back after March. "In the past, too, unscrupulous people have killed the geese for consumption. In most cases, Furadan, a pesticide, was used to kill them," he said.
