GUWAHATI: Amranga missed its most loved daughter, Mamoni Raisom Goswami, on Thursday when her dream hospital was formally inaugurated here, exactly a month after she passed away. The Jnanpeeth awardee had donated Rs 40 lakh for the setting up of the hospital. But destiny had prevented Mamoni baideu from inaugurating it as she could not recover from illness.
Deputy commissioner of Kamrup, S K Roy, while opening the 12-bedded PHC, said the hospital will ensure that people don't have to go elsewhere for treatment. Named after the author's father and paternal uncle, the Umakanta and Chandrakanta Goswami PHC, has facilities like X-ray and ultrasound at present. "The health minister has assured that the hospital will offer the best of facilities and increase the number of doctors from the current strength of two," said Roy.
Noted litterateur Arun Goswami said the trust formed to preserve the memory of the litterateur will take action against those publishing houses which are printing Mamoni's books without consulting the trust or senior members of the family.
Goswami added that the trust's next step will be to transform her residence at Guwahati into a museum where items used by her will be displayed for public viewing.
Palasbari MLA and former education minister Jatin Mali said, "Being the representative of this constituency, I feel proud of what she has done for the people. The hospital will be a big help to the people of this area."
MLA of Chaygaon constituency Rekibuddin Ahmed hailed the initiative of Mamoni, who played a key role in breaking the deadlock between the ULFA and the government. He urged the administration to name the road connecting Mirza with Amranga after her.
