Silchar: Cachar police seized a consignment of banned cough syrup valued around Rs 2 crore during a checking operation on NH-27 near Puticherra toll gate under Barkhola police station on Thursday night, reports BB Goswami.
Police intercepted a six-wheeler truck and searched it, leading to the recovery of 21,600 bottles of codeine phosphate syrup packed in 144 cartons. Two mobile phones were also seized.
According to police, the contraband was allegedly being smuggled from West Bengal to Tripura. Cachar DSP (border) Rimank Baruah said investigation suggests the consignment was meant for illegal trafficking. Truck driver, identified as Mithun Sarkar alias Motin Sarkar, a resident of West Tripura district, was detained from the spot.
