Agartala: Tripura has achieved a milestone in renewable energy by surpassing 6 MW of solar power generation under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.
State power minister
Ratan Lal Nath said on Saturday the state aims to exceed 10 MW of solar power production by March next year. Commending the efforts of the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency, he said the initiative has received an exceptional response across the state over the past two years.
Currently, 17,131 electricity consumers are participating in the scheme, with 1,762 households already equipped with rooftop solar panels. These installations have transformed ordinary rooftops into mini power stations, collectively producing 6 MW of electricity on a daily basis, Nath said.
What was once a concern for many — a lack of power and darkness after sunset — has now turned into a symbol of hope and consistent illumination across the state, the power minister said.
More than just providing electricity, the project is creating opportunities for income generation. Beneficiaries are not only meeting their own energy requirements but are also selling surplus power back to the state electricity corporation, earning direct financial benefits in return.
Nath revealed that at least 187 consumers have sold their excess solar power and are collectively earning Rs 53,514 monthly, credited directly to their bank accounts.
This initiative has seamlessly evolved from being solely eco-friendly to becoming a practical source of financial empowerment for households. From rural landscapes to urban zones, the gleaming solar rooftops across Tripura deliver a profound message of self-reliance and environmental sustainability.
The scheme is fostering awareness about harmonising daily life with natural resources while steering toward a more sustainable future. Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura is not only extending the reach of development beyond physical power grids but is also sparking aspirations, instilling hope, and paving a path towards a greener, self-reliant future, the minister added.
