Convention on April 10 against KPS Magnet Scheme in Karnataka
Dharwad: Opposition is growing against the proposed KPS Magnet Scheme, with various organisations alleging that it could lead to the closure of nearly 40,000 government schools across the state. A public convention against the policy has been called in Bengaluru on April 10, with prominent intellectuals, activists and representatives of various organisations expected to participate.Addressing a press conference in Dharwad, leaders of the organising committee said protests against the govt's policy have been under way for the past four months. They said local committees have been formed in several parts of the state, including Dharwad district, to safeguard public education and prevent school closures.According to the organisers, more than 600 govt schools in Dharwad district alone are under threat. Educationists, writers and activists have also raised concerns, saying the move could deprive children from economically weaker sections of access to education. They said the govt is proceeding with plans to merge or shut down selected schools. Mapping exercises have been conducted to identify institutions for consolidation, and notices have been issued ahead of parent meetings scheduled on April 8 and 9.Alleging that administrative steps are being taken to implement the scheme from the upcoming academic year, the organisers termed the move "anti-people" and said the agitation would intensify.
