BIJAPUR: Rain and floods have converted Nadahalli into an island. The village has been caught between the streams Soogali Halla and Doni River.
Power and water supply have been disrupted for nearly 10 days, and there has been no bus service for over a week. No vehicles have been able to cross the streams people have waded through neck-deep water to reach drier areas.
What is worse, no government official has ever visited the village, since the rain started on September 29.
There are no signs of government intervention here - no survey of collapsed houses or crop damage has been done and no gruel centre opened. Absolutely, no effort has been made to restore power or water supply. Bus service is still a dream.
The village school has been closed and no one knows when it will re-open. The villagers are praying for sunshine that could recede flood waters and restore normalcy.
Similar is the fate of Hadaginahala. It can only be reached by foot. There are two roads to enter the village - one is through Talikoti and the other that passes through Minajigi. If you come in from Talikoti, you need to walk for a kilometre and if you drive through Minajigi, you need to cover at least three kilometres by foot. Scores of houses have collapsed here. "There have been no casualties as people shifted out of the village and began living in the outskirts well before the houses collapsed," says Manju Hiremath, a resident.
