tirupati: a three-day national seminar on the conservation of eastern ghats, jointly organised by the tirumala tirupati devasthanams (ttd) and the environment protection training and research institute (eptri), began at the srinivasa auditorium, sree venkateswara university campus, tirupati, on sunday. tamil nadu governor p s ram mohan rao inaugurated the seminar and p v jaya krishnan, secretary, ministry of environment and forests presided over the function.
the governor gave a clarion call to scientists and environmentalists to begin an earnest initiative to conserve the eastern ghats and expressed concern over the delay in the implementation of works by the environmental protection training and research institute. a postal cover on red sanders, for which the eastern ghats, particularly the tirumala ghat of chittoor district are famous, was released by uma ram mohan rao, the first lady of tamil nadu to mark the occasion. about 120 research papers from scientists and environmentalists all over the country were received by the organisers, suggesting various ways and means to conserve the eastern ghats. according to the organisers, the seminar would focus on the biological, physical and the socio-economic aspects of the eastern ghats.
