Manipur Violence News Live Updates: CM N Biren Singh urges political parties to support peace in the region

Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang on Friday spoke to his Manipur counterpart N Biren Singh and urged him to take care of the Sikkimese students and citizens staying in the state. Singh assured Tamang that the Manipur government will provide all possible assistance to the Sikkimese students and citizens in Manipur, the Sikkim CM said in a social media post.

"I urge all Sikkimese citizens in Manipur to remain calm and carry an identification card with them at all times," Tamang said, adding that the Sikkimese people should take care of their safety and well-being and remain indoors or in a safe location.

At least five Deputy Inspector General (DIG) rank officers and seven senior superintendent of police (SSP) and SP rank officers of the CRPF have been tasked to coordinate deployment of various security forces in violence-hit Manipur, official sources said. The Centre has rushed in about 20 fresh companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), including the CRPF and the BSF, in the wake of the spiralling violence between tribals and the majority Meitei community leading to displacement of more than 9,000 people from their villages.The induction of the CAPF units apart from that of the Army columns and the Assam Rifles is going on.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has cancelled all his programmes for the upcoming assembly elections in Karnataka in the wake of clashes reported in parts of Manipur, sources said.

According to the sources, Shah who is closely monitoring the situation in Manipur, is expected to continue to hold meetings with authorities in the state, about the prevailing scene and measures being taken to restore normalcy.

An organisation of Christians in the NE expressed “deep pain and concern” over the violence in Manipur, where over 9,000 people were displaced so far in clashes between tribals and the majority Meitei community. The United Christian Forum of North East urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and work towards a peaceful resolution to the situation.

Manipur witnessed large-scale violence on Wednesday in multiple regions, where armed groups set fire to houses. Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma directed his officials to evacuate students of the state studying in various educational institutions in violence-hit Manipur even as he appealed for peace and restraint. Mizoram CM Zoramthanga on Thursday said the state government would not be a mute spectator of the turn of events and violence in Manipur and is prepared to safeguard the ‘Zo’ people in the neighbouring state. On his instagram account, Zoramthanga wrote that he has issued instructions to his home minister Lalchamliana and home commissioner H Lalengmawia to hold meetings to take up issues of the safety of “our people” in Manipur.

Northeast Frontier Railway has stopped all Manipur-bound trains. "No trains are entering Manipur till the situation is improved. The decision has been taken after the Manipur government advised to stop train movement, says Sabyasachi De, CPRO of NF Railway.

The Nagaland government is keeping a close watch on the prevailing law and order situation in Manipur and has opened a helpline for the citizens of the state requiring evacuation from Manipur, an official release said on Thursday. Information is also being obtained for making arrangements for those from Nagaland requiring evacuation from Manipur.

Manipur government on Thursday issued shoot at sight order in "extreme cases" to contain spiralling violence in the state between tribals and the majority Meitei community which has displaced over 9,000 people from their villages. The order issued on behalf of the Governor said 'shoot at sight' could be resorted to when persuasion, warning and reasonable force "have been exhausted and the situation could not be controlled". The notification signed by the Commissioner (Home) of the state government was issued under provisions of the criminal procedure code 1973.
