Indore: A pall of gloom descended over a family that had just celebrated marriage of two brothers after four youths were killed and eight injured in an accident in early hours of Monday. The crash took place near Devguradia trenching ground in Indore when a car carrying the wedding party collided with a truck.
The youths were returning to Indore from Ashta after the wedding ceremony. Driver of a truck moving ahead them allegedly overtook another vehicle and abruptly applied brakes. The car trailing behind was unable to stop in time, crashing into rear of the truck.
The impact of the collision was so severe that the car was completely mangled. Three youths, 24-year-old Irfan, 20-year-old Aris and 19-year-old Farhan died instantly. Farhan, the groom's cousin, was decapitated in the crash. Another youth, 23-year-old Arfad, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Just minutes before the crash, at 1:13 am, Aris had posted a celebratory status on social media featuring photos from the wedding. Shortly after, news of the tragedy reached the family.
Among the eight injured, two remain in critical condition and are fighting for their lives at MY and Medicare hospitals.
The deceased were the breadwinners of their families. Irfan was a graphic designer, Aris worked at a medical store, while Farhan and Arfad were painters.
The accident sparked protests as angry locals blocked road and allegedly attempted to set a vehicle on fire. What should have been a day of welcoming new brides has now turned into a grim preparation for four funerals, leaving the community in a state of shock and grief.
Protesters alleged that police arrived late and accused an ASI on duty of being intoxicated. ASP Rupesh Dwivedi said that the truck driver was taken into custody. Allegations levelled against the police personnel were being investigated. "We have seized the vehicles and a case was registered," Dwivedi said.
