Indore: Policing requires officers with not only effective managerial skills, but also have effective communication skills as the latter remains the weakest link between the law enforcers and citizens, director general of police RK Shukla said here on Wednesday.
"We need officers, who not only have great managerial skills, but also effective communication, because that might be the weakest link between the police and citizens," the DGP said addressing the valedictory ceremony of a leadership programme for the officers of Madhya Pradesh Police at IIM-Indore.

Shukla said leadership is the most significant concern for the police, and such programmes give the officers a chance to become aware of what is happening, what the current issues are and how they can be dealt in a superior manner.
"I believe that management and communication are the most vital qualities, which are valued in public services. Although the officers are exceptionally enriched in these skills, being updated is also equally essential," he said.
IIM-Indore director Professor Rishikesha T. Krishnan stated that the main objective of the institute is to be contextually relevant business school, and as it remains in touch with the government officials gives it a privilege to conduct such programmes, which are in synchronization with the mission.
The two-day leadership programme was conducted to enhance the leadership quality of the officers and boost their communication and management skills.

Professor Ranjeet Nambudiri, who coordinated the programme, mentioned that this initiative was launched six months ago. It was followed by discussions with police training teams across the state. The course deals with effective communication and leadership ability, which plays a major role in the public services, he said.
The two day programme witnessed participation of around 40 officers from many districts across the state. The programme had sessions on motivating others, building effective team, effective communication, leadership, group decision making, negotiation, interpersonal effectiveness and managing subordinates. The participants of the programme were given certificates by DGP Shukla.
