Jaipur: The South Western Command of the Indian Army held its investiture ceremony at the Hisar Military Station where Army Commander Lt General Dhiraj Seth presented 10 Sena Medals (gallantry) and seven Vishisht Seva Medals on Saturday.
Veer Nari Shreya Choudhary received Sena Medal (gallantry) awarded to her husband Major Vikas Bhambhu posthumously.
Major Bhambhu was a resident of Jaipur. The officer’s father and mother were also present at the event. In the summer of 2022, there was a need to monitor enemy activities along the border. Major Bhambhu launched a reconnaissance mission to gain information about enemy patrolling. This mission involved extremely challenging flight operations in difficult terrain at an altitude of 16,000 feet. Major Bhambhu displayed indomitable courage by flying close to the dangerous border during patrol. The officer collected valuable information with extraordinary fighting skills, while ignoring the present danger. With the help of this information, further planning was enabled, and peace was maintained on the northern borders. For his display of determination and extraordinary gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Sena Medal (gallantry).
Another Jaipur resident, Major Pushpit Sharma, too was awarded the Sena Medal (gallantry). Sharma, upon receiving information about the presence of terrorists in a village in Pulwama on 27 April 2022, launched a cordon and search operation. As mission leader, he applied the initial cordon with intensity and spotted terrorists hiding inside a cowshed.
On realising their presence, the terrorists started firing indiscriminately at Sharma, hitting his companion with several bullets. Using precise fire amidst difficult conditions, he killed a terrorist and evacuated his injured companion, displaying excellent fighting skills. While attempting to escape, the terrorists threw grenades and opened heavy fire, amidst grave danger, Sharma engaged the terrorist in close combat and killed him.
Similarly, Capt Shubham Gaur (Now Major) was also decorated with the Sena Medal (gallantry). On 14 April 2022, Gaur received information about the presence of four terrorists in a village in Shopian district. He displayed excellent fighting skills and surrounded the suspicious place. While searching, terrorists started firing indiscriminately at him. He killed a terrorist and saved his partner from the terrorist's fire by pushing him away. Taking advantage of this opportunity, another terrorist started heavy firing on him. He not only provided cover fire and eliminated one terrorist but also seriously injured another terrorist. His inspirational leadership and battlefield experience in the face of grave danger resulted in the death of two terrorists. The Investiture Ceremony is conducted once a year to confer various awards to personnel who have distinguished themselves by acts of individual gallantry and exceptional devotion to duty. The awardees this time included 16 officers and one Soldier. The Army commander conferred General Officer Commanding in Chief South Western Command Unit Appreciation to 15 units.
