Ruckus at Kota hosp after two patients die, kin assault resident docs
Kota: Chaos erupted at the govt-run MBS Hospital in Kota Friday after relatives of two critically ill patients allegedly assaulted resident doctors, vandalised hospital property and staged a protest outside the hospital following the deaths of the patients. The incident took place around 12.30pm when Kishan (25), a resident of Tonk district suffering from tetanus, and Madan Lal (55) from Bundi district, admitted with severe gastric complications, developed breathing problems while undergoing treatment in separate wards of the hospital. Doctors said resident staff immediately started CPR as the condition of both patients deteriorated. However, family members allegedly accused the hospital of negligence and created a ruckus inside the premises. Kishan had been admitted to the isolation ward while Madan Lal was being treated in the emergency ward since Thursday night. Both were said to be in critical condition. "While residents Dr Priyan and Dr Rakshit were administering CPR, 20 to 30 people entered the room, assaulted the staff, thrashed them and tore their clothes. They escaped to the bathroom, however they chased them and assaulted them," Dr Priyank alleged while speaking to the media. A relative of Kishan, however, alleged that the patient's condition worsened immediately after he was administered an injection. "As he grabbed the doctor, he handed over these (stethoscope and T-shirt) to my hands and ran away," the relative claimed. Angry family members allegedly damaged furniture and bathroom gates inside the hospital and carried one of the bodies out on a hospital bed before staging a road protest outside the hospital. Police reached the spot, brought the situation under control and sent the bodies for postmortem. "The residents are filled with outrage over the manhandling and assault. They boycotted work briefly, however they agreed to handle emergency services showing sensitivity," MBS Hospital superintendent Dr Dharamraj Meena said. He denied allegations of negligence, stating that both patients were already critical. Circle DSP Dr Poonam Chauhan said separate cases were registered under Section 194 of BNSS for investigation. Resident doctors later staged a protest demanding strict action against those involved in the assault.
