KANPUR
: Two teenage girls allegedly attempted suicide by consuming poison in Uttar Pradesh’s Chitrakoot district after being filmed while bathing in the Yamuna river and later reprimanded by their families, police said on Friday.
The incident occurred in the Pahari police station area. Police said they received information from the local community health centre that the two girls, aged 16 and 17, had consumed poison.
By the time officers reached the facility, they had been referred to the district hospital in Karwi and were later shifted to Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda for advanced treatment.
According to Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar Singh, the girls told police on the way to the hospital that the incident stemmed from an episode a day earlier, when some individuals allegedly took photos and videos of them while they were bathing in the Yamuna.
The matter reached their families, who scolded them, following which the girls took the extreme step.
Police have launched a multi-pronged probe. Three teams have been formed, one to monitor the girls’ medical condition, another to coordinate with their families, and a third to identify and track down those who filmed them.
