KANPUR: Several events were held in the city on December 16 to remember Delhi rape case on Monday. Residents ways paid tributes to Nirbhaya. People also staged protests at various places and demanded security for women and capital punishment to the juvenile accused in the that case.
The women used this opportunity to stage protest against the rising cases of crime against women.

Girls also showed anger on the police and administration, who could not give proper atmosphere to them while commuting on roads.
Several young girls with placards in hands staged demonstration at Ghantaghar area in the afternoon. The girls tied black ribbon on head and raised voice against the crime against women. They demanded death penalty to the juvenile accused in Nirbhaya case. 'We want security for women', 'the women are still unsafe even after one year of Delhi gang rape case', the girls with these messages attracted the passerby and urged the people to keep the memories of this incident alive.
In another event, members of a local NGO and local leaders organized a 'kanya bhoj' as mark of tribute to Nirbhaya. Several girls were served 'halwa' and 'puri'. The organizers also performed traditional Kanjika Puja to spread the message in society that girls are treated like goddess in India.
"December 16 will never be just another day for the country. Today, one year after the horrendous Nirbhaya gang-rape that shook the country, is more significant for the girls across India who are struggling against crime and exploitation. The women will never forget this case. May god give strength to her family," said Vaishali, a student.
