Amphan caused irreversible damage to city’s biodiversity: environmentalists

As cyclone Amphan uprooted more than 15000 trees in Kolkata, it has also destroyed the biodiversity of the city. Thousands of birds and millions of insects died during the storm and the environmentalists said it would take years for Kolkata to get back its former biodiversity. Supriyo Nandi, a nature conservator, said that the damage was even greater because during the lockdown phase pollution level in Kolkata went down substantially and numerous birds and animals came out of their hidings.

“So, the storm caught them unguarded. I alone have rescued at least 20 injured birds from North Kolkata,” he added.
However, at the same time, he believes that this is an opportunity in disguise and we can repair the damage with panful and scientific conservation works.
