Ranaghat: The last day of nomination for the Ranaghat Lok Sabha constituency witnessed high drama on Tuesday with four candidates filing papers as BJP candidates for the seat. Among the four, two — Mukut Moni Adhikary and Jagannath Sarkar — submitted the all-important Form B filled by the party allotting its symbol to the two.
Adhikary, a government doctor whose resignation the state is yet to accept, is the original nominee of the party for the seat.
On Monday, BJP prepared a Plan B and asked its Nadia south district president Jagannath Sarkar to also file his nomination.
All nominations will come up for scrutiny by polling officials on Wednesday. If Adhikary’s resignation is accepted by Wednesday morning and he can submit the relevant papers showing he doesn’t hold an office of profit under the state by then, he is likely to be the candidate.
Besides Adhikary and Sarkar, two others – Bidhan Chandra Krishi Visvavidyalaya professor Manabendra Roy and BJP worker Sujit Biswas — submitted nominations declaring in the B Form that their symbol would be the lotus. But they could not attach any document from the party allotting its symbol to them.
