KOLKATA: Scores of youngsters made a beeline for Mission Admission presented by The Times of India at Gorky Sadan on Friday.
Divided into seven sessions, it helped students set their sights on conventional and alternative careers around the country, apart from exploring study opportunities in USA, UK and Singapore.
A general session on undergraduate courses flagged off the meet.
Uma Gopalakrishnan, director of institution alliance at Admizzions Campuz, spoke on the broad options available for the students.
It was then time for students to learn about the prospects of a career in fashion. Ahana Mazumdar, an assistant professor at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) enlightened the youngsters on what it takes to hone your fashion sense and know if you are ready to join a course.
Travel and tourism was a sunrise sector that offered tremendous study and job opportunities, said Shivani Vig, head of north and east zones at Kuoni Academy. Reading out a long list of the various kinds of tourism that have emerged over the past decade, she pointed out that the sector even offered entrepreneurship opportunities. But it was the session on study opportunities in UK and USA that evoked the interest of most students.
Kausik Mitra, director of Education Pathways India, conducted a lively session on university courses in the two countries with the largest number of Indian students. He went on to elaborate on the application process and the kind of preparation you need to zero in on a course at a particular university. “There are hurdles to be crossed. You need to take the IELTS, SAT or the TOEFL to prove your efficiency in English. A letter of recommendation from a teacher and your statement of purpose were two very important components of your application. Make sure you write them well and the recommendation should come from someone who has taught you,” said Mitra.
For those who aimed a degree from a UK or USA university, but didn’t wish to travel that far, Singapore was the ideal destination, said Tricha Vatsa of SIN Global Education.
Indranil Ghosh, senior manager of British Council held the final session of the day on study opportunities in Britain.
