KOLKATA: Rakesh Mishra, the prime accused in the Swapna Chakraborti murder case, has attempted suicide in Chhattisgarh and is now under treatment at a hospital there with serious burn injuries.
Swapna was found murdered a week ago and her body was dumped beside Canal East Road at Narkeldanga. The assailants stuffed her body in a steel trunk after slitting her veins and throat.

Swapna, a resident of Baishakhi in Salt Lake, was probably murdered just hours before her body was discovered. Probe revealed that Mishra was her husband and used to stay with her at her father's house.
Mishra went missing after her body was found and police confirmed that Swapna was murdered at her Salt Lake residence. Blood stains were found in the flat but the murder weapon was not recovered.
Mishra, who used to stay earlier at Janbazar in central Kolkata, had close links with the aides of notorious criminal Hatkata Dilip. A few years back, Mishra married Swapna who was a singer and used to perform at different musical soirees. In 2004 she was on the stage at Nayapatti where two persons were killed by Dilip's gang. Swapna was a close friend of Laila Dilip's fiancee. During investigation Swapna was arrested in connection with the double murder case.
Police suspect that Swapna was having an affair and Mishra murdered her after an altercation. Swapna's father Mukul was not at home when this happened. After returning home, he found neither his daughter and Mishra.
Soon after Swapna was identified, police raided several places looking for Mishra and finally traced him to a Chhattisgarh hospital. The hospital authority informed police that, few days back Mishra was admitted along with a woman and both had serious burn injuries. Police suspect the woman is Mishra's first wife. A city police team have already reached the hospital but can't arrest Mishra till his condition improves.
Sources said, police are waiting to talk to Mishra as they are not ruling out the possibilities of the involvement of the criminals who are close to Dilip.
