HOWRAH: Two high school students, Abhi Chakraborty (17) and Munia Chakraborty (18) of Shantingar in Howrah, were beaten up by neighbours on Wednesday and then arrested on charges of teasing and molesting young girls and women for the last few days. Police are searching for the other youths involved. Local people said these teenagers had been creating problems in the locality for some time.
"They had smashed street lights on the Shantitala-Sitala Bazar stretch and also committing nuisance by teasing young girls," alleged a local resident. Local people alleged that police did not take any steps to nab the culprits.
On Sunday, a Class VII student of Nischinda Girls School was returning home in the evening on bicycle when the boys started teasing her. She fell off the cycle and broke her spectacles. The miscreants fled after snatching her wristwatch. The girl’s father, Tapan Dutta, lodged a complaint. On Monday, some teenagers allegedly molested a woman, in her thirties. Two other schoolgirls were also reportedly molested by these teenagers later. The local people managed to identify some of the miscreants. On Wednesday morning, the angry mob stormed the houses of Abhi and Munia, dragged them out and thrashed them. Later, the two were handed over to the police.
