Talk of monetary offer a conspiracy, says CM; doctor's parents claim Mamata Banerjee is lying
NEW DELHI: The family of the junior doctor found raped and murdered at RG Kar hospital wondered Monday if they should have "recorded a video of us being offered money", taking offence to chief minister Mamata Banerjee demanding "proof" of her making any such move.
"The CM said we were lying... It is the CM who is making a false accusation. She had said we would receive some money and suggested that we create something in memory of our daughter. I replied that we would come and collect it from her office once our daughter received justice," the victim's mother said, soon after Mamata dismissed talk of a monetary offer as "lies, slander, misinformation, and a conspiracy".
In her rebuttal of CM Mamata's statement, the junior doctor's mother said the DC (North) of Kolkata Police, too, had offered compensation after her daughter's body reached their home on the evening of Aug 9.
A TOI report on Aug 16, coinciding with widespread protests over the rape-murder, quoted the victim's father as saying he had declined monetary assistance as "it will hurt my daughter if I accept compensation for her death". The victim's mother said Mamata's call on Monday for protests to end and a "return to festivities" amounted to "trying to strangle the movement for justice".
