Kozhikode: Welfare Party of India (WPI), political wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, has not fielded any candidates for assembly elections.
The party would announce whom to support on Wednesday. According to party leaders, a decision regarding this will be taken after holding district level meetings on Tuesday.
In 2021 assembly elections, WPI had contested in 18 assembly seats and had provided support to UDF in the other seats.
If the party announces support to UDF in most seats, it would provide CPM political ammunition for its familiar charge that UDF is aligning with "communal and extremist elements" — a key plank of LDF's campaign in 2021 assembly elections and as recently as in Nilambur byelection, where WPI had openly supported UDF.
