KANPUR: BJP MLA, who was elected from the city's Govind Nagar assembly constituency in the bypoll held on October 21, was challaned on Sunday for riding a motorcycle without a helmet. The MLA, Surendra Maithani, accepted his mistake and promised that he would not flout traffic rules again.
Maithani, who is also the district president of BJP, is a first time MLA.

He was riding a bike along with his supporters and party workers in his constituency to wish people on the occasion of Chhath. His pictures riding a two-wheeler went viral after which the traffic police challaned him for flouting the rules.
Talking to TOI, Maithani said, "I forgot to wear the helmet as I was in a hurry to meet people on the occasion of Chhath. Being a citizen of this country I am also bound to obey laws and rules like other people. I accept my mistake and promise that this will not happen again. I have paid the fine for driving the bike without a helmet."
