Man arrested for killing woman colleague
Lucknow: The Gomtinagar police on Friday claimed to have solved the murder case of a woman found dead inside her rented accommodation in Lucknow, with the arrest of a 30-year-old man who allegedly strangled her following a dispute over their relationship.
Police said the accused, identified as Deepanshu Singh, allegedly killed Nisha Devi (35), a married woman and his former colleague, before locking the house from outside and fleeing to his residence in Madiaon.
Police said the case came to light on May 22 when complainant Ramdas, a resident of Vinay Khand in Gomtinagar, approached the police alleging that Deepanshu had murdered his daughter-in-law Nisha, wife of Deepak Kumar.
Based on the complaint, Gomtinagar police registered FIR number 194/2026 under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to murder.
Police said the accused was detained on Friday.
DCP, east zone, Deeksha Sharma said that during questioning, Deepanshu allegedly confessed that he had known Nisha since 2024 and both worked together at a private hospital in Gomtinagar. Investigators said Nisha was already married, while Deepanshu himself got married in Jan.
“After his marriage, Nisha allegedly began pressuring him to leave his wife and live with her, which frequently led to disputes between the two,” said DCP Sharma.
Police said that on May 19, Deepanshu visited Nisha at her rented accommodation in Gwari village under Gomtinagar extension area, where another argument broke out over the issue. During the confrontation, he allegedly strangled her to death and fled.
Sharma said the murder remained undetected initially because the house was found locked, and police later launched an investigation after family members raised suspicion over Nisha’s disappearance.
Police said legal proceedings against the accused are underway.
