Net-zero and low energy trends mark shift in construction
Lucknow: Energy efficient materials, automation systems and net-zero concepts are rapidly reshaping architecture across corporate offices, commercial complexes and residential housing. The transition toward low-energy, low-waste construction was highlighted at the fourth edition of Design Confluence and Building Materials organised by the Indian Institute of Interior Designers (IIID) Lucknow regional chapter.
Projects showcased from green office spaces in Gomtinagar extension to solar-powered homes along Shaheedpath reflected the city's gradual shift toward environmentally responsive design. Architects noted that adopting sustainable solutions typically raises initial construction cost by about Rs300-800 per sqft, depending on automation, facade systems and renewable integration. However, reduced electricity consumption and maintenance enable most buildings to recover the additional expense in 4-7 years."Clients today ask first about operating cost rather than only aesthetics. Double-glazed façades and insulation panels stabilise indoor temperature and reduce power bills," said architect Anurag Jain. Sustainable materials are steadily replacing conventional resources. Recycled wood, fly ash bricks, bamboo composites and low carbon cement are being used to reduce emissions and conserve natural reserves. Architect Anupam said, "Material selection now defines responsible design without compromising finish or strength".Automation is also becoming central to building performance. AI-based lighting, security monitoring and energy-management dashboards allow occupants to regulate consumption in real time. "Automation is efficient. Sensor lighting and intelligent controls reduce wastage while improving comfort," said architect Shikhar Singh. Net-zero buildings generating as much energy as they consume through solar integration and planned ventilation are gaining popularity. Modular prefabricated construction further cuts time and material loss. Architect Arun Kapoor said, "Factory-made components ensure precision and minimal debris, while digital tools like Building Information Modelling help teams predict performance and avoid errors before construction begins."
