Lucknow custodial death: SP delegation, Azad Samaj Party chief visit Aman’s family
Lucknow: Two days after the death of a Dalit man allegedly in police custody in Lucknow, a delegation from the Samajwadi Party visited his family on Sunday. Also present was Azad Samaj Party chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad.
A party delegation led by Mohanlalganj MP RK Chaudhary visited the family of Aman Gautam, a Dalit youth who died allegedly due to police brutality in Lucknow. Chaudhary condemned the incident, stating that grave injustice was done to the family. Emphasising that Aman was innocent he demanded a high-level investigation into the matter. Chaudhary also urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for Aman's death and called for a compensation Rs 50 lakh, along with a government job for the grieving family.
Chandrashekhar Azad termed the incident a "murder by the police". He expressed outrage, stating that in Uttar Pradesh, the life of a Dalit was "cheaper than pulses." Drawing parallels between Aman's death and the 2018 Vivek Tiwari murder case, Azad pointed out that both incidents were caused by the police brutality.
"Vivek Tiwari's family received Rs 50 lakh in compensation, and his wife was given a Class II rank job. But we have little hope that Aman's family will receive the same treatment, given the government's stance on Dalits. His family has been left orphaned, and we are here to demand justice, compensation, and a job for Aman's wife," he said while speaking to the media.
"The UP government has remained silent on the issue. The family staged protests just to get a case registered against the responsible policeman—something the police should have done themselves. Law and order have collapsed, and this incident occurred under the Chief Minister's watch," he added.
Meanwhile, BSP president Mayawati also reacted to the incident, expressing her deep sorrow over the death of the Dalit youth. Taking to the social media platform X, she urged the government to take strict action against the police officers involved and provide full support to Aman's grieving family.
