Cyclone Dana surged toward the Bengal-Odisha coast on Wednesday, with landfall expected between Bhitarkanika and Dhamara in northern Odisha, approximately 350 km from Kolkata, during the night between Thursday and Friday. It is projected to strike as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds reaching up to 120 km/h. Odisha prepared for the storm’s impact by evacuating between three to four lakh people from vulnerable regions on Wednesday. As a precaution, Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) will halt operations from 5 pm on Thursday until 9 am on Friday. Cyclone Dana Live: BMC all set to tackle Cyclone Dana
As the cyclonic storm will cause heavy rains, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday deployed dewatering pumps to tackle water logging in low lying areas of the city. It has also made arrangements for restoration work after the impact of the cyclone is over.
The BMC has opened a control room and issued helpline number 1929 for city residents to assist them during Cyclone and help them in solving post Cyclone waterlogging issues. This 1929 Call Centre is operational 24x7 with 12 dedicated lines and can be extended further if required, said official sources.
Senior officers from the BMC are monitoring the cyclone and post cyclone situation in the control room shift wise. Till 5pm on Thursday, 220 calls were received for tree cutting, streetlights, sanitation and other complaints.
As a part of the preparation, BMC has set up 109 temporary cyclone shelters with provision of food, drinking water, toilet facilities and diesel generator (DG) set. As many as 36 pregnant women have been shifted to the health centres.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi twice on Thursday and enquired about the state's preparedness for the impending cyclone, set to make landfall between Bhitarkanika and Dhamra post midnight. Cyclone Dana: East Coast Railway diverts, short terminates or cancels around 203 trains
As severe cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall at midnight on October 24 and 25, East Coast Railway have diverted, or short-terminated or cancelled around 203 trains to ensure public safety.
Speaking with ANI, General Manager of East Coast Railway Parmeshwar Funkwal said that it is "fully geared" to face cyclone. He further informed that East Coast Railway has been stationing Emergency Response Teams, they have ensured the functioning of 'War rooms'.
"East Coast Railway is fully geared to face the cyclone. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has directed that we should have minimum impact on the passenger services and maximum preparedness for the safety of passengers... We are stationing our Emergency response teams, earth-moving machinery, monsoon materials...War rooms are functioning in the railway board," Funkwal said.
"No passenger train will be travelling in the cyclone-affected zones...We have diverted or short terminated or cancelled around 203 trains. Special emphasis is being laid on Bhubaneswar to Bhadrak and Paradeep sections," he added.

Passengers faced inconvenience on Thursday as trains, buses, and flights were cancelled due to the cyclonic storm 'Dana'. Many people from other states were stranded at different railway stations, including Bhubaneswar, Puri, and Cuttack stations, as they did not know about the cancellations.
Though many people returned from the station after not finding any train for their journey, some of them waited at the station to get a train to their destinations. More than 200 trains were cancelled by the Railways. Finding no other options, some passengers stayed at the station premises, hoping for the resumption of trains as soon as possible.

Heavy rains and strong winds hit southern West Bengal on Thursday as the state administration evacuated over 250,000 people in preparation for the approaching severe cyclonic storm 'Dana,' expected to make landfall in Odisha after midnight. Demonstrating India’s advanced weather monitoring capabilities, the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) announced on Thursday that it is actively tracking Cyclonic Storm ‘Dana’ as it "fast advances" toward the coastal regions of Odisha and West Bengal.
The space agency’s state-of-the-art satellites, EOS-06 and Insat-3DR, have been monitoring the storm’s development since Oct 20, providing crucial data to support disaster management operations.
"The EOS-06 satellite’s Scatterometer sensor played a vital role in early detection by measuring ocean wind patterns and their circulation patterns. This early warning capability gave authorities valuable lead time to implement necessary safety measures in potentially affected areas," Isro said.

Cyclone Dana: Normal life hit in Bhubaneswar, trains cancelled, flight ops suspended
Normal life was affected in Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar on Thursday with many people preferring to stay indoors in view of cyclone Dana that barrels toward the state's coastal region, threatening to impact nearly half of its population. A low-density vehicular movement was noticed in the state capital, while a few people were spotted in the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bus Terminal in the city, airport and railway station.
A few passengers in the busy Bhubaneswar railway station were spotted as the East Coast Railway (ECoR) cancelled 203 trains. Some tourists were seen taking shelter in the station.
"We have visited Jagannath temple in Puri and are scheduled to return to our home through a train. But, we got a message that our train had been cancelled. So we are taking shelter here," said a tourist from Maharashtra.
The Bhubaneswar airport authorities decided to suspend flight operations from 5 pm on October 24 to 9 am on October 25 in view of cyclone Dana. During the 16-hour flight suspension, about 40 flights, both domestic and international, will be affected, disrupting travel plans for many passengers, another official said.

As the time for suspending flight operations at the Kolkata airport approaches due to the impending cyclone Dana, authorities have initiated preparations to safeguard individuals, aircraft, and infrastructure at the facility. The airport will halt flight operations for a period of 15 hours, commencing from 6 pm on Thursday.
Dr Pravat Ranjan Beuria, the airport Director, stated, "All entry and exit doors of the terminal building will be sealed after the last flight departs from the Kolkata airport while the aircraft parked on the bays will be tied up."
To prevent potential damage during the storm, the airport will take additional precautionary measures. "In addition, all aerobridges will be retracted and ladders will be tied together to prevent those from moving and hitting planes during the storm," Beuria explained.
In accordance with the standard operating procedure, all vehicles operating on the airside of the airport will be removed from the operational area. The airport director further added, "All ground handling equipment will also be chained together so that nothing moves due to the gusts."

Our target is zero casualties. Work is underway to ensure 100% evacuation. Till now, more than 3 lakh people have been evacuated. More than 2,300 pregnant women have been moved to safer places. More than 7000 cyclone shelters are ready. Adequate medical and veterinary teams also deployed. Police deployed to give a sense of security to the people. DG set, Gensets and Inverters stationed at district hospitals to ensure power supply. NDRF and ODRAF teams are deployed in the affected districts. Cyclone Dana: Elderly women barred from Odisha's Puri temple for next 2 days
The Puri district administration has urged elderly women devotees to stay away from the Jagannath Temple on Thursday and Friday on account of Cyclone Dana, set to hit the state within the next 24 hours. Popular tourists sites like the Konark Sun Temple as well as the beaches in Puri, Konark and Jagatsinghpur districts have also been made out of bounds for visitors for the next two days.

Odisha deputy chief minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo on Thursday said that the government is fully prepared and all the concerned departments and staff are ready to deal with any situation that arises due to severe cyclonic storm Dana's landfall. The forecast of landfall is between midnight to tomorrow morning. The landfall will be between Puri and Sagardeep near Bhitarkarnika and Dhamra. The wind speed during the landfall is expected to be 100-120 kmph. At present, the wind speed in coastal areas in 60-70 kmph. Wind speed will be very high in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Medinipur districts. The intensity of rainfall will increase gradually. With cyclone Dana rolling towards the Odisha coast, the authorities on Thursday advised devotees against visiting the Jagannath temple in Puri and expedited preparations to minimise the impact of the calamity on the 12th-century shrine. Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain said that the devotees, including those undertaking a month-long 'Kartik Brata' ritual, should also be discouraged from visiting the temple as a safety measure.

Cyclone Dana Live: Several districts in West Bengal experience moderate to heavy rain on Thursday
Several districts of West Bengal received moderate to heavy rain on Thursday morning, as severe cyclonic storm 'Dana' inched closer to the state's coast and that of neighbouring Odisha, the IMD said. The cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha early Friday with wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour (kmph), it said. The weather system lay 280 km southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 370 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal) at 2.30 am, the IMD said in a bulletin.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds began affecting several districts in Odisha on Thursday as severe cyclone Dana approached the coast, moving at a speed of 12 km/h in the Bay of Bengal.The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that at 5.30am, the cyclone was centered approximately 210 km southeast of Paradip, 240 km south-southeast of Dhamara, and 310 km south of Sagar Island, West Bengal.
