Two women die as soil caves in construction site
Madurai: Two women workers died as soil caved in a 12-foot pit that was dug out for construction of a marriage hall near Silaiman in Madurai district on Friday evening.
The deceased were identified as Dhanalakshmi, 46, of East Silaiman, and Tamilarasi, 60, of Silaiman.
Police sources said that the construction of a marriage hall was commenced on bare land near Thangasamy Theatre in East Silaiman, which belongs to Thangaraj of Viraganoor.
On Friday at around 4pm, construction workers were involved in digging a pit for about 12 feet. Suddenly a portion of soil caved in within the pit. The duo who were working near the pit suddenly got pulled in and buried under the soil. They were suffocated and died on the spot.
Based on information, police and fire and safety personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies and sent them to Govt Rajaji Hospital for autopsy.
A case has been registered by Silaiman police.
