MANGALORE: Deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj has directed the chief executive officer of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat R Shivashankar to suspend ZP engineers -- Ravindra Rao, Chandrakanth, and Subash Chandra -- for inferior quality road works in Puttur and Bantwal taluks. The roads in their jurisdiction had been laid out to a thickness of 8.5 cm against official specification of 17 cm.
Ponnuraj who accepted a cheque for flood relief from the D K Working Journalists Association here on Thursday, said there is no question of paying the bills of the contractors who have executed the work, and strict action would be initiated against engineers who pass the bills without proper inspection of the work. "We will examine if a cheating case too can be brought against such engineers," the DC stated.
The administration has also taken note of the fact that the same road has been repaired under various schemes, and steps would be taken to display boards alongside such roads giving details of the scheme/project under which the work has been taken up. The DC who visited the two taluks recently told the delegation from the association that he has directed all but two out of 10 roads inspected by him in the two taluks to be re-laid.
