: As many as 26 engineering students attached to Junkyard Maniacs 2.0, a students' club of National Institute of Technology Karnataka
(NITK
), Surathkal
are gearing up to drive their off-road racing car in Baja Sae
, a national-level intercollegiate car design and racing competition. The four-day racing event, to be organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers, India and it will be held at National Automotive Test Tracks in Pithampur of Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh from February 13.
These budding engineers have completed designing their dream machine at a cost of Rs 3 lakh. Every year about 100 engineering colleges from across the country will be shortlist to take part in the event.
NITK's car, which is built with ST-52 steel, is equipped with a 305 CC Briggs and Stratton engine. The club members finished the works of the car in eight months.
Nanjunda S Vellu, a II year metallurgical and material engineering student and a member of JY 2.0 told TOI that the car can travel at a maximum speed of 80 kilometre per hour. "The car has been tested on various tracks and it will be unveiled next week. It is very difficult to design a car, because we have to spend lots of money from our own pocket," he added.
