MUMBAI: A special narcotics court on Wednesday granted bail to an accused arrested for allegedly smuggling over 800 kg of amphetamines after the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) admitted in court that samples of the "contraband'' tested negative. Last Tuesday, the DRI filed a reply to the bail application of the accused Pradeep Dhond, a businessman who deals in pharmaceutical products, saying that of the 53 samples sent to the Deputy Chief Chemist (DyCC) of Mumbai Customs, none have tested positive for "the presence of amphetamines'' or any narcotic or psychotropic substances.
Ten samples have not even been "clearly identified'' and have been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CSFL) in Hyderabad on the advice of DyCC. The DRI pleaded with the special Narcotics and Psychotropic Drugs (NDPS) court to grant them time to get reports from CSFL and keep the bail application pending.
At the time of seizure on June 12, the DRI had claimed that this was the biggest haul of amphetamine in India so far. The DRI officials intercepted a tempo inside the Air Cargo Complex, Sahar and seized 441 kg of lead acetate and amphetamine. The accused, Pradeep Dhond's godown was searched and 9 bags of amphetamine weighing about 317 kg and another consignment of 65 kg of amphetamine were found. The total haul was a whopping 823 kilos of amphetamine. The shipping bill of these drugs had Mexico as its final destination, it was alleged.
