Human rights commission takes cognizance of TOI report on hospital negligence

Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of a TOI report published Monday, which highlighted the plight of a 70-year-old man with suspected bleeding in the brain. The report flagged how the patient was tossed from BMC-run MW Desai Hospital to Jogeshwari Trauma Hospital without an ambulance or medical support.The commission has written to the municipal commissioner for "failing to take necessary action" and has asked for a response with relevant documents by late June. TOI reported a situation where contractual doctors are taking up two 24-hour shifts and then taking leave for the rest of the week to dedicate more time to their private practice. This arrangement is impacting patient care.Furthermore, the report also prompted a visit by Chief Medical Superintendent (Peripheral Hospitals) Dr Chandrakant Pawar and Additional Municipal Commissioner Vipin Sharma to MW Desai Hospital. The two issued directions to doctors and allied medical staff to communicate with patients in a more cordial manner. Inspections were carried out at outpatient departments, ICUs and several other hospital wings.The officials also interacted with patients seeking medical treatment and held discussions with doctors and nurses.
