Mumbai: The MMR region, which includes parts of Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai, can brace for light rain activity from later this week. According to independent weather forecasters, scattered light showers are likely to begin from Thursday, May 21, and go into next week.“The summer anticyclone over the Arabian Sea has now dissipated, allowing low-level moisture-laden westerlies to enter Konkan, including Mumbai, from Tuesday, May 19, ahead of the monsoon. This infusion of moisture, along with support from a developing low-pressure system off Karnataka, will trigger showers coming from the west and localised thunder too overnight,” said Athreya Shetty, an independent weather forecaster.Further, Rajesh Kapadia of Vagaries of Weather said, “The pre-monsoon low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea has already triggered widespread rainfall across Kerala, coastal Karnataka and parts of Goa. As the system gradually strengthens the offshore trough along the west coast later this week, we can expect an increase in pre-monsoon thunderstorm activity from May 24 to 28 along the entire west coast, including the Konkan region.
Mumbai, too, is likely to witness spells of showers during this period.”The IMD in its five-day forecast from May 18-22 stated that Raigad could see light rain and thundershowers. The official date for onset of monsoon over Mumbai is June 11, with last year seeing the earliest-ever onset on May 26, 2025.
