Mumbai BMC Budget 2026 Highlights: Budget size rises to Rs 80,952 crore for 2026-27; capital outlay raised to rs 48,164 crore

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday presented its budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, with a total outlay of Rs 80,952 crore, up from Rs 74,427.41 crore in 2025-26. The budget was tabled before the newly formed civic standing committee, chaired by BJP corporator Prabhakar Shinde. This marks the first time in four years that the budget has been presented to an elected body, following civic elections in January 2026. Of the total budget, Rs 48,164 crore has been allocated for capital expenditure, primarily for major infrastructure projects such as the Mumbai Coastal Road (North), Goregaon-Mulund Link Road tunnelling, the proposed Gargai Dam, and desalination plants.The education sector has been allocated Rs 4,248.08 crore, a 7.4% increase from the previous year. Key initiatives include the establishment of a new CBSE school at Mumbai Public School, Kondivita, digitisation of 7,953 classrooms with LED interactive panels, setting up 479 English language labs, and upgrading science laboratories in 190 schools. Additionally, 20,000 tablets will be distributed to Std IX students to promote tech-enabled learning. Three art excellence centres will be established across Mumbai, NCC squads will be introduced for Std VIII–IX students, and a pilot Science Park will be launched in two schools.Students in school uniform will continue to receive free BEST bus travel, with special buses covering routes where regular services are unavailable. Programs to enhance student safety, gender equity, environmental awareness, elocution, music, art, and library facilities are also part of the budget. Further, 28,470 desks and 44,938 chairs are planned for new classrooms, while musical instruments, art kits, and other learning materials will be provided to promote holistic development.The budget also emphasised ongoing recovery of Rs 7,241.38 crore from the state government and strict action against a civic employee who submitted fake educational certificates. Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani presented his second budget since taking charge in March 2024, highlighting a focus on infrastructure, technology, and student welfare to improve services across Mumbai.
