Mumbai engineer dies, after glass slab crashes
MUMBAI: An engineer was killed and his colleague injured when a glass slab from an under-construction building at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) crashed down on them on Friday.
Saurabh Das (28), who worked with Wipro, had gone to the BKC to survey the construction of a building of his company. The police said the workers fixing the glass facade of the building had not adopted all safety measures and this negligence on their part led to the incident.
After inspecting the construction work on the building, Das and his colleague, Kaustabh Malik, stepped out for tea. After the break, as the two were returning, the slab fell on them at the entrance of the building, the police said. According to the cops, glass sheets had been lifted on to the terrace with the help of a crane. The practice usually is to tie a glass slab with a rope and lower it down to the intended floor, where another group of labourers wait and dislodge it. On Friday afternoon, as the slab was being lowered to the 15th floor, it gave way and fell on Das and Malik. The two were taken to hospital where Das was declared dead. Malik is under treatment.
Senior police inspector Vinayak Sawade of the BKC police station said: “We are inquiring about the persons responsible for the incident. We will take appropriate action against them.” The BKC police have registered a case of death due to negligence against the contractor.
