Catchment areas of the five reservoirs supplying water to Chennai received copious rain on Thursday, leading to a sharp increase in water levels. With total storage in the five reservoirs crossing 80% of total capacity, the city's drinking water needs are secured for the next ten months, officials said. Surplus water from Poondi reservoir was discharged at the rate of 5,000 cusecs by evening, a water resources department (WRD) engineer said. The rainfall significantly boosted inflows into these reservoirs. As of 6 pm on Thursday, the combined storage in the five reservoirs stood at 10,573 million cubic feet (mcft).
