Tamil Nadu Rain Live Updates: 'Red' alert for southern districts, waterlogging hits delta districts, IMD predicts heavy rain in Theni, Madurai

Heavy rainfall across southern Tamil Nadu, which began on Wednesday night, led to widespread disruptions throughout the region on Thursday. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued red and orange alerts for several districts, the rainfall intensity remained moderate, causing significant waterlogging in many areas. Districts like Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai were among the worst-hit, with roads turning into waterlogged stretches, impeding vehicular movement.

In terms of rainfall, Thondi and Thiruvadanai in Ramanathapuram district received 5cm and 4cm of rain, respectively, while parts of Madurai, Dindigul, and Theni reported 1-2cm of rainfall. Thanjavur recorded 6.1cm in Manjalaru, with other areas like Kandiyur and Sathanoor experiencing property damage, including a collapsed hut wall. The southern districts under red alerts, including Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, reported only moderate rain, failing to meet the heavy rain predictions.

The ongoing rainfall has caused severe waterlogging and infrastructure damage, exacerbating the challenges of daily life. However, despite the moderate rainfall, the forecast for Friday includes more isolated heavy rain across districts like Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari. The IMD's warning for continued wet weather has put authorities on alert, with more rainfall expected to further disrupt life in the region.
