Opposition opposed women’s reservation Bill to suppress their voices: Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai: The opposition's anti-constitutional face has been exposed as they opposed the Women's Reservation Bill, driven by a mindset to eliminate women's power, alleged chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The fight for women's reservation will end the day 33% are seated in Parliament and state assemblies, he added.
On Tuesday, the BJP organised a Jan Akrosh Mahila Sammelan at Worli. Earlier, women party workers, along with several BJP leaders, staged a demonstration from Jamboori Maidan in Worli to the NSCI Dome, shouting slogans condemning the opposition.
Addressing the gathering, Fadnavis said the idea of giving reservation to women was under consideration since 1996. It was late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who made three attempts to get the reservation for women bill passed, but could not succeed because he did not have a majority. The Congress, on the other hand, made no such efforts even when the Manmohan Singh government had a two-thirds majority, he said. Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the initiative to bring 33% reservation for women, he added.
The CM alleged that the opposition opposed the bill, fearing if the women's power of this country awakened, their political shop would shut down and if the common people came into the mainstream, their own daughter's prospects would be affected.
"If the fire is not lit now, the opposition will continue to suppress women's voices every time. Large-scale awareness will need to be created for this. Signatures of one crore women will need to be collected and slapped on the faces of Rahul Gandhi and Maha Vikas Aghadi leaders," said Fadnavis.
