Nagpur: Saffron flags, illuminated portraits, and the steady rhythm of dhol-tasha rehearsals have set the tone across the city ahead of Shiv Jayanti, marking the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on Thursday.In localities such as Mahal, Sakkardara, and Besa Pipla, youth mandals and social organisations have been working round-the-clock to decorate prominent squares. Volunteers were seen putting the final touches on lighting and sound systems on Wednesday evening, as rehearsals for dhol-tasha performances and Shiv Garjana recitals continued late into the night.

In Mahal, preparations focus not only on cultural festivities but also on a mega blood donation campaign. The organising committee has set a target of collecting 394 units of blood, symbolically marking the 394th birth anniversary of the Maratha ruler.Datta Shirke, one of the leading functionaries of the organising committee, told TOI that the blood donation drive will begin on February 19 and continue until March 6. The initiative aims to combine celebration with community service. Beyond Mahal, several other squares across the city are gearing up to host early morning aartis, floral tributes, and processions.
Dhol-tasha pathaks have been rehearsing for days, with synchronized beats echoing through neighbourhoods each evening. School and college students are also preparing tableaux highlighting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's vision, strength, and concept of swarajya.Police deployment is expected at major junctions to regulate traffic during processions and public gatherings. Street vendors selling saffron scarves, badges, and flags have added to the festive atmosphere.With cultural fervour on one hand and a large-scale blood donation drive on the other, this year's Shiv Jayanti in Nagpur is set to reflect both reverence for history and a collective commitment to social good.
