Nagpur: A divorce notice and police complaint against domestic violence drove a top milk supplier to stab his wife's paramour 26 times, before leaving him bleeding to death at his rented flat in Gourkhede Complex on Saturday.
Forty-eight hours later, the businessman, Umang Dadwe, 44, was nabbed by the crime branch from Crorepati Lane, where he had come to meet a friend and contact his lawyer.
Dadwe had planned the murder and recced the flat since May 2 after he got a customised bill of his wife's cell phone, which she secretly used to make calls at night to her lover, Ajay Shriwas, 30, whom she knew since her college days. Ajay, a loan recovery agent, reignited his relationship with Dadwe's wife a few years ago.
Dadwe ran a lucrative milk business from his Ganespeth unit, but his marriage hit rock bottom after he grew suspicious of his wife's clandestine affair and would often beat her. The trigger came when Dadwe caught his wife talking to Ajay and sparks flew when he discovered a hidden SIM and cell phone.
Soon, his wife walked out of Dadwe's home, sent a divorce notice and lodged a complaint with Ganeshpeth police for domestic violence.
An enraged Dadwe decided to murder Ajay. On May 2, he conducted a recce with his friend Sandesh Bhosale to identify Ajay's house and waited in ambush. On Saturday, he confronted Ajay with wife's cell phone details, pinned him down and brutally stabbed him.
Dadwe then fled wearing a red cap and a white cloth across his face. He took an autorickshaw from Shivaji Chowk to mislead police before switching to the getaway car at Ravi Nagar Chowk, where his friend Bhonsale was waiting.
While on the run, Dadwe called his lawyer and even spoke to a beauty parlour owner to plan an outing. He was finally nabbed by crime branch officers led by senior inspector Subhangi Deshmukh and assistant police inspector Gajanan Chambhare and his team. Clinching clues for police was the phone bill Dadwe accidentally dropped at the crime scene and his friend, Bhosale's confession to police during interrogation. Also, his red cap was caught in several CCTV cameras, helping police to crack the case.
