Nashik: Four men were arrested on Friday for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 12 lakh from a 63-year-old man for returning his computer hard disk containing objectionable videos.
Deputy commissioner of police (Zone 2) Kishor Kale said one of the accused had been working in the complainant's office for the past eight to nine years. "The suspect allegedly stole the hard disk from the complainant's computer and discovered multiple objectionable videos and photographs," he said.
According to the Nashik police, the accused then demanded Rs 12 lakh from the complainant for returning the hard disk. After the victim approached the police, a trap was set under the guidance of police commissioner Sandeep Karnik, leading to the arrest of all four suspects.
The police identified the arrested as Akash Bakre (28), Prakash Panpatil (25), Suraj Gavai (27) and Shripat Shinde of Satpur and nearby localities. " We have recovered the hard disk, two pen drives and a cellphone from the accused," an officer said.
The accused were produced before a court, which remanded them to five days of police custody. A case has been registered against the accused at the Satpur police station under Sections 305(A) (theft) and 308(2,3) (extortion) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
