NAVI MUMBAI: The accident- prone black spot on the Mumbai-Goa highway after the Gad river in Kankavli taluka has taken four lives in the past nine months and left 31 injured. The mishaps continue even though speed is limited to 15 km per hour here.
The right turn area is preceded by a flyover and the Gad river bridge and is followed by a hill on the left.
The PWD national highway division had not planned safety measures possibly to save on cost; but now it has become a nightmare.
The PWD-NH division handling Sindhudurg district has two options, either to dismantle the Gad river bridge and construct a new one by acquiring land, or construct a tunnel in the hill/raze portions of the hill. Both are costly affairs. However, two years after opening the highway stretch the cost saving formula is taking a toll on lives.
Kankavli police data states the series of mishaps, including a luxury bus that turned turtle, killing two and injuring 31, on January 19; a truck driver killed after it overturned on November 13, 2022; cruiser van and truck mishap on August 26, 2022 that killed one; and a narrow escape for a driver whose truck overturned on March 19, 2022.
Kankavli police constable Rupesh Gurav said, "This is a dangerous area with immediate right turn towards Goa bound carriageway, resulting in frequent mishaps."
