VASHI: Mayor
Sagar Naik appears to have taken serious note of the TOI report on firecracker stalls being set up few meters away from the CRZ 1 area. The mayor told TOI, if the structure posed a threat, then his office shall direct the authority to take it down.
"As far as I know there can be no permanent construction around CRZ areas and the structure being put up is temporary.
However, if even this is not allowed, then I will look into the matter and get the concerned officials to remove it at the earliest so that no harm is caused to the environment," said Naik. The firecracker stall is being set up just few feet from the CRZ area and social activist Ajay Marathe had raised concerns about the damage it could cause to the habitat.
The mangrove cell in Mumbai, too, had taken note of the alleged violation and sought an explanation from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for granting permission for the same.
NMMC commissioner Abasaheb Jarhad said that he has asked his officers to look into the matter. Marathe expressed his delight at the proactiveness of the NMMC officials. "If the stall gets removed, then it would be a commendable act on the mayor's part," he said.
