Navi Mumbai International Airport nears completion: 4 years in the making, Terminal 1 to open in October; MMR's second commercial airport with 150 daily flights

Construction of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) started four years ago; Terminal 1 inauguration expected by October.

NMIA will become Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s second airport handling commercial airline operations alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

NMIA will serve 90 million passengers per year and handle 3.2 million metric tons of cargo annually.

Plans to scale up to 55 daily departures by mid-2026, including 5 international flights, and 60 arrivals/departures by winter 2026.

Greenfield airport, built entirely from scratch on unused land.

IndiGo will start with 36 domestic flights, connecting 15 cities from day one, and increase to 158 daily flights by November, including 14 international departures.

Akasa Air to operate 15 daily domestic flights initially, expanding to over 40 daily flights including 8–10 international flights by summer 2026.

Original ribbon-cutting date of September 30 postponed by one month; airport will soon handle first commercial flights.

Air India Express announced 40 daily domestic arrivals and departures connecting 15 cities during Phase 1 of operations.

Passengers can choose flights from ‘BOM’ (Mumbai) or ‘NMI’ (Navi Mumbai). Combined capacity of both airports expected to reach 145 million passengers per year by 2032.
