NOIDA: A day after TOI published a report on the Noida centre of Women Power Line 1090, Navniet Sekera, Women Power Line Inspector General of Police, on Saturday visited the centre and took stock of the hurdles to the functioning of the helpline.
Sekera directed the officials to resolve network fencing problems faced by the centre as early as they can.
Sekera visited the centre at 3pm and stayed there for an hour taking stock of the situation.
He said that there were some technical glitches as sometimes phone calls landed in the Delhi police’s control room. “We are in talks with the department of telecommunication (DoT) to fix network fencing problems. We will ensure that the phone calls made from Noida and
Ghaziabad region lands in this regional centre,” he told TOI.
He said that there is a problem of network fencing in areas where two states’ border meet. “We found more complaints of network fencing in Mayur Vihar area where network fluctuate from Noida to Delhi. We have written to the department of telecommunication to ensure that the phone calls of all consumers, whose mobile tower comes in Noida and Ghaziabad, shall land in Noida power line. I will personally visit the DOT on Monday to resolve the issue,” he said.
The police officials said that the phone calls of different private telecommunications will be routed though BSNL to the power line.
Dinesh Yadav, SP (city), is the nodal officer of the helpline in Noida. He said some telecommunication companies like Airtel, BSNL have started following the new DoT order. “The telephone calls of consumers associated with these companies land in our centre. But there are some other companies which are yet to follow the order. We are pursuing the issue and it will be resolved by Monday,”
Yadav said.
Sekera said that the Women Power Line has immensely empowered women in the state. He said that the state police department earlier received 1800 complaints of harassment a year, but now the Power Line receives around 2,000 calls every month. The Women Power Line registered a total of 5,95,204 complaints and 5,86,616 have been resolved since it was launched in November 2012. This comes to around 98% of successfully resolved complaints.
From Gautam Budh Nagar district, a total of 2663 complaints were filed while 2644 complaints have been resolved. A total of 5088 complaints were received from Ghaziabad and 5030 complaints were resolved.
Sekera said that the state government first conducted a research before launching this service. “We found that women want to register complaints but sometimes they are bound to certain social and familial restrictions. We analysed the problems and launched this facility with five basic principles. The victim’s identity is always kept confidential. This service is specially for women and they should only make a complaint. We do not ask them ever to visit police station. We make sure that the complaint is received by women tele-callers only. We also remain in touch with the victims three months after the complaint is resolve to ensure theire is no problem,” he said. Sekera said that 91% calls are about misbehavior and harassment on telephone calls. The Power Line receives 2% calls about harassment on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. This is followed by complaints of harassment at public places, domestic violence and miscellaneous complaints. He said that the Power Line has been able to resolve 98.3% cases successfully.
Officials at the Noida centre are in the process of giving finishing touches to the 10-seated Power Line. At present, a team of 23 women police constables, one sub-inspector and one inspector monitor the calls from 8am to 8pm every day. The plan is to make it a 24x7 monitoring centre once it is inaugurated officially.
The
Uttar Pradesh government had launched this service to prevent atrocities against women in November 2012 in Lucknow. The Noida regional centre will also cater to complaints of Ghaziabad and Hapur. UP DGP Javeed Ahmad is expected to inaugurate the Women Power Line later this month.
