BIHARSHARIF: A Dalit woman, Sonwa Devi (23) was allegedly held captive for nearly two months by the owner of a private nursing home near the Girlss High School here for non-payment of bills for a caesarean operation she had undergone. She was admitted to the nursing home on November 19. Sonwa Devi (23), wife of Vinod Ravidas of Hasani village in Nalanda district, was freed on Tuesday after her mother lodged a complaint with Nalanda DM Anand Kishore, alleging that the nursing home owner illegally confined Sonwa for non-payment of dues.
Nursing home owner Pankaj Kumar said against expenses of around Rs 20,000, her family paid Rs 5,500 to the nursing home. When the nursing home authorities demanded clearing of the balance, her mother Kaushalya lodged a complaint with the DM, alleging that the nursing home authorities had illegally confined the patient.
...D M Anand Kishore said Kaushalya Devi met him at janata darbar on Tuesday and alleged that her daughter had been confined by the nursing home management for non-clearance of dues. Apprehending it to be a case of atrocity on a Dalit, the DM asked deputed sub-divisional officer Shekhar Chandra Verma and executive magistrate B K Sao to probe the incident. They visited the nursing home and freed her. Meanwhile, the SDO and the executive magistrate visited the home of Sonwa at village Hasani and recorded her statement on Thursday.
