Phacoemulsification, commonly known as phaco', is a method used for cataract surgeries. Phaco involves emulsifying the cataract and aspirating it out through a small 2.8 mm incision that heals within a week to ten days.
The three live surgeries were performed by Ajit Hazari from Aurangabad, Chandrashekhar Wavikar from Thane and Chandrakant Shetye from Goa. The workshop was attended by more than 65 ophthalmologists from Aurangabad and from the Ganapati Netralaya, Jalna. Those attending the workshop included Dashrath Kothule, professor and head at the Government Medical College and Hospital and his team, and J Mishrikotkar from the Mahatma Gandhi Missions medical college.
The workshop highlighted the use of Ozil, which is much safer and faster than the current, traditional phaco surgeries, Hazari said.
The workshop also witnessed the felicitation of D L Maria, one of the most senior ophthalmologists in the town, by Santosh Agarwal, president of AOA, and Sameer Deshpande, the secretary. Speaking on the occasion, Maria stressed the importance of holding such programmes to improve and inculcate newer, safer technology into daily ophthalmic practice.cleared/md
