PUNE: Corporators in Pimpri Chinchwad are firm about the civic body-run sewage treatment plant in Charholi treating only sewage released from authorized constructions in Alandi.
Municipal commissioner Shrikar Pardeshi said he will inform the district collector to direct the Alandi Municipal Council to release sewage from legal structures into the pipeline network for treatment.
The issue came up at the general body meeting last week when the proposal for treating sewage of Alandi municipal council at the corporation-run sewage treatment plant in Charholi was discussed. The corporators said since the civic body would stop drainage and streetlight facilities to unauthorized constructions (built after March 31, 2012) in Pimpri Chinchwad, it must apply the same yardstick to Alandi Municipal Council.
The PCMC has proposed treatment of around 1 MLD (million litres per day) of sewage water in Alandi, as the municipal council does not have any sewage treatment facility.
The untreated sewage water is directly released in the Indrayani river.
The Charholi plant can treat 21 MLD, but tackles only 7 MLD. The PCMC has agreed to treat Alandi's sewage because a drainage pipeline was laid in Alandi's limits after the municipal council gave permission.
In another development, PCMC will begin treating around 20 MLD sewage from Chinchwad which is released in the Pavana river. Vasant Kachi, deputy city engineer of PCMC, said,
"Around 15 to 20 MLD sewage generated from Walhekarwadi, Chinchwadenagar, Chinchwadgaon and other areas is released directly without treatment into Pavana river near Gokhale Park. The civic body will treat this sewage at Bhatnagar plant which can treat 30 MLD. At present, only 12 MLD water is being treated."
